Enhancing HIV Prevention: Self-Dispensing Condom Machines to Improve Access

The Migration and Rights Lab (MRL) continues to expand its HIV prevention efforts under the HIV Self-Testing for Everyone (HIVST) program, strengthening access to essential services for marginalised communities in Ghana. In collaboration with the Ghana AIDS Commission, we have received self-dispensing condom machines, a significant addition that will improve accessibility to preventive services in our target communities.

  • Expanding Access to Prevention Services

Access to condoms remains a critical component of HIV prevention. However, many individuals face barriers such as stigma, cost, and limited availability, particularly in marginalised and underserved areas. The introduction of self-dispensing condom machines eliminates these barriers by offering free, anonymous, and 24/7 access to condoms. Installed in strategic community locations, these machines will ensure that individuals—especially young people, key populations, and those at higher risk—can easily obtain protection without fear of discrimination.

  • Strengthening the HIV Self-Testing Program

The HIVST program, implemented by MRL under Global Fund Grant Cycle Seven (2024–2026), has already made significant strides in increasing access to oral and blood-based HIV self-testing kits. The program aims to empower individuals with knowledge of their HIV status, reduce stigma, and connect reactive cases to health facilities for confirmatory testing and treatment. By integrating self-dispensing condom machines into this initiative, we are taking a holistic approach—promoting both testing and prevention as part of a comprehensive HIV response.

  • Impact on Community Health and Well-being

The placement of these condom machines aligns with Ghana’s National HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan (2021–2025) and the global 95-95-95 targets, which aim to increase testing, treatment, and viral suppression. By addressing gaps in HIV prevention, this initiative also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reducing Inequalities).

Key expected benefits include:

  • Increased condom usage: More individuals will have access to protection, reducing the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Stigma-free access: The machines provide a discreet and non-judgmental way for individuals to obtain condoms.
  • Improved sexual health awareness: The presence of these machines reinforces safe sex messaging and normalises condom use.
  • A Step Towards Ending HIV/AIDS

The fight against HIV/AIDS requires multi-faceted solutions that integrate testing, treatment, and prevention. The addition of self-dispensing condom machines to the HIVST program is a progressive step in making HIV prevention services more accessible, stigma-free, and community-driven. As we continue to engage with stakeholders and communities, MRL remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
