Migration and Rights Lab (MRL) Selected as GHANET Implementing Partner for Global Fund HIV Self-Testing Program
September 12, 2024As part of the “HIV Self-Testing for Everyone” (HIVST) program, our mission to bring accessible and stigma-free HIV testing to every household in Ghana took us to the community of Techiman North. During one of our community engagements, three women approached our team, curious about our presence and the nature of our work. After explaining that we were offering the opportunity to test for HIV in the privacy of their homes, they expressed a keen interest in getting tested. We agreed to visit them once our session with the group concluded.
Upon arriving at their home, just as we were about to proceed with the first test, their husband arrived unexpectedly and angrily demanded an explanation for our presence. We respectfully apologised and tried to explain our mission, but he firmly declared that his wives belonged to him and that only he had the right to make decisions about their health. He then stormed off, leaving us concerned for our safety and unsure of how to proceed.
We began to pack our materials to leave, but the three women insisted on continuing with the test. To our surprise, their husband soon returned, this time with a changed attitude. He calmly apologised for his earlier outburst and allowed us to continue with the testing. He even asked to be tested alongside his wives. It was a moment of relief for everyone.
After conducting the tests, we were pleased to inform them that all the results were non-reactive. The husband, who had initially been resistant, expressed gratitude for our patience and professionalism, acknowledging that we had done a great service for his family. He thanked us for handling the situation with respect, despite his initial anger, and assured us that he now understood the importance of the work we were doing.
This encounter highlights the core mission of the HIVST program—to bring HIV testing to every individual, no matter their circumstances, and to do so with dignity and respect. By providing access to self-testing, we empower individuals and families to take control of their health, foster open conversations about HIV, and ultimately contribute to reducing the stigma surrounding HIV in communities like Techiman North.
We are proud to be a part of this journey, offering life-saving services to those who need them most. This success story is a testament to the power of patience, understanding, and community engagement in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
