Empowering a Family Through HIV Self-Testing in Techiman North
October 29, 2024On this International Day of Migration, the Migration and Rights Lab (MRL) celebrates migrants’ invaluable contributions to their host and origin countries while advocating for their rights and dignity.
Migrants bring immense value to their host communities. They contribute to cultural diversity, innovation, and economic growth. Across the globe, migrants fill critical gaps in labour markets, drive entrepreneurship, and enrich societies through cultural exchange. Their efforts strengthen economies, foster creativity, and build inclusive communities.
At the same time, migrants continue to support their countries of origin. Remittances sent home fuel local economies, fund education, and support the livelihoods of left-behind families. Migrants also share expertise, skills, and ideas, bridging knowledge gaps and fostering development in their home communities.
Observing the Day with Meaningful Activities
This year, the Migration and Rights Lab, in collaboration with key partners including the Sewa Foundation and the Coalition of CSOs on Migration in Ghana, organised a series of impactful events to commemorate this day:
- Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Beach
- A solemn moment to honour departed migrants who lost their lives in search of better opportunities.
- Public Lectures
- Addressing migration challenges and opportunities, with experts sharing insights on improving migration pathways and safeguarding migrants’ rights.
- Diaspora Football Matches
- Friendly matches between the Nigerian and Liberian diaspora communities in Ghana to promote unity, inclusion, and cross-cultural collaboration.
- Meet and Greet at Kotoka International Airport
- Welcoming return migrants and engaging the public with one-on-one information on safe, regular, and orderly migration.
Our Commitment to Migrants’ Rights
The Migration and Rights Lab remains committed to creating inclusive systems where migrants can thrive. Our rights-based and human-centred approach ensures that migrants are seen, heard, and supported, whether in transit, at their destinations, or upon return.
We call on stakeholders, policymakers, and the public to honour the contributions of migrants and commit to safeguarding their rights. Together, we can create societies where migration is celebrated as a force for good.
